Moccamaster™ Coffee Maker - Tips and Tricks

Tips and Tricks to make your coffee to taste better using Moccamaster™ Coffee Maker

The Moccamaster Coffee Maker is said to be one of the best coffee makers available by its dutch manufacturer. They are handmade in the Netherlands and have been awarded quality seals by both the Specialty Coffee Association and the European Coffee Brewing Centre. It is the same coffee machine model that has been available since 1968 and is pretty much unchanged. In addition to making outstanding premium coffee, the Moccamaster comes in a unique design with a range of different colors, can brew up to 40 fluid ounces of coffee in a few minutes, has a 5-year warranty, is inexpensive to buy, and requires inexpensive replacement parts. It’s a classic that’s here to stay. Keep reading for a few tips on how to get the best tasting results from this coffee maker.

Moccamaster(TM) Coffee Maker

Using the right water.

When making a fresh pot of coffee, you should use the purest, chlorine-free cold water, and instead of pouring it into the coffee pot, you should pour it from a clean carafe. Old oil builds up in your coffee pot from previous brews and can manipulate the flavor and cause residue to build up inside the machine.

Proper use of your filter.

If you are using a white filter as opposed to a brown filter, you should rinse it with warm water before use to rinse out any possible bleach, which could change the taste of your premium coffee. Since brown filters aren’t made with bleach, the flavor comes through a lot better without them needing to be rinsed. You can also look into using high purity paper filters or a more permanent filter made from neutral materials. Rinsing any filter with water first is always helpful to remove lint and give a nice and even extraction.

The right temperature.

Using the right temperature is another key component to brewing the perfect cup of coffee with the Moccamaster. The most desirable temperature for brewing coffee is between 195 and 205 degrees Fahrenheit. If your brew temperature is too hot, you will burn your coffee, which causes a bitter taste.

Choose the best coffee.

You should choose the best coffee bean type for you. All coffee beans are either Robusta or Arabica and then they are each broken down into several more different types. The type of coffee beans you use will greatly affect the end product. Soluble coffee is more expensive but is considered to be better than the ones with insoluble grains.

Can you really make a good cup of coffee using coffee maker?

Add flavor to your coffee beans.

Before grinding your coffee beans, consider adding flavor to them. Flavors like cinnamon, chocolate, sweeteners, and other delicious ingredients can be added to your coffee beans. This is a little-known secret used in coffee shops all over the world. Adding it to your coffee beans as opposed to your coffee after it’s brewed gives it the maximum flavor. You would literally be mixing it in to be soaked up into your coffee beans.

Grinding fresher coffee beans.

Consider buying fresh coffee beans and grinding your coffee beans to medium coarse fresh from a coffee roaster. If you roast your coffee beans longer, your coffee will be stronger, and if you don’t roast them for very long, your coffee will of course be lighter. You will definitely want to choose a really good quality coffee grinder, and make sure you are not using stale coffee beans, as this can give your coffee an ashy flavor. Be careful not to grind your beans too long so you can avoid over extracting the coffee, causing the flavor to be bitter. Consider always buying coffee beans as opposed to buying ground coffee, particularly because you don’t know how long it’s been on the shelf. It’s also a good idea to use an air-tight container to store your coffee to prevent a possible build up of moisture.

Use the best coffee to water ratio.

To get the best coffee to water ratio, it is suggested that you should use about 7 grams of coffee to every 3 fluid ounces of water. Some people prefer their coffee stronger than others, but this coffee to water ratio is sure to give an enjoyable balance for anyone. Some people compare brewing a great pot of coffee to making a great cocktail because the ratio is so important for making a great finished product. Consistency is key.

Stir the coffee in the filter.

Once you have your fresh ground coffee in the filter, and after about 30 seconds after it begins to brew, it’s good to stir it in the filter to help eliminate any dry clumps. It is also good to stir it again inside the filter once the water stops pouring into the filter.

Stir the coffee in the pot.

Once your coffee is finished brewing, give it another good stir while it’s in the pot. The Moccamaster usually ends up brewing stronger at the bottom of the pot, and lighter at the top. Stirring the coffee in the pot will help distribute the oils for a full, uniform flavor in every cup.

Clean and descale your coffee pot regularly.

Cleaning your coffee pot and machine after every use is also very helpful in getting the best flavor out of your premium coffee. The buildup of coffee residue is sure to cause clogs and blockages. It could even affect your brewing time and temperature. The plastic water tank is fixed on the Moccamaster, so it cannot be replaced. Cleaning the water tank with a non-abrasive sponge or cloth will be the best alternative to keeping it clean. Moccamaster’s manufacturer also recommends descaling the machine once every 3 months or every 100 brews. If you have trouble keeping track of how long it’s been since the last descaling, pay attention to if the taste of your coffee, the temperature, or throughput time changes. Those are key factors in determining when it’s time to descale.

FAQs about Moccamaster Coffee Maker

Why is Moccamaster considered the best automatic drip coffee maker?

Three reasons. First, water temperature precision — Moccamaster uses a copper boiling element that consistently heats water to 196-205°F (91-96°C), the optimal coffee extraction range. Most cheap auto-drip machines either over-heat (scorching coffee) or under-heat (under-extracting). Second, brewing time consistency — Moccamaster brews a full pot in 4-6 minutes, the right window for proper extraction without over-extracting. Third, durability — the machines are repairable, parts are available, and units last 10-15+ years with normal use.

Specialty Coffee Association certifications back the reputation. Moccamaster is one of few auto-drip machines that meets SCA's home brewer certification standards. Most consumer-grade Bonavita and Breville machines fall short of these standards even at higher prices.

Moccamasters are made by Technivorm, a Dutch family company that hand-assembles each machine in the Netherlands. The European craft-manufacturing approach produces consistent quality at higher per-unit cost than mass-Asian-manufacturing alternatives. The price ($300-400 vs $50-200 for typical auto-drip) reflects real production cost differences.

How does Moccamaster coffee compare to manual pour-over?

Comparable quality with different convenience tradeoffs. Moccamaster produces specialty-grade coffee at the press of a button; manual V60 pour-over produces specialty-grade coffee with 5-7 minutes of active attention. The cup-quality difference is small enough that most drinkers can't reliably identify which is which in blind tastings.

Where Moccamaster wins: convenience, consistency across daily brews, full-pot capacity (8-10 cups for households or guests), no skill development required. Where manual pour-over wins: variability for experimentation, peak quality ceiling slightly higher with skilled barista, lower per-brew cost (no machine investment).

Practical: Moccamaster suits households where multiple people drink coffee daily and the bedroom-shower-coffee-out-the-door routine matters. Manual pour-over suits single-person mornings where the brewing ritual is part of the appeal. Both produce excellent coffee with quality beans like JPCo's Hokkaido Blend — the equipment doesn't change the underlying bean character much.

Which Moccamaster model should I buy?

KBT (thermal carafe, 10-cup capacity) is the standard recommendation for most home users. The thermal carafe keeps coffee hot for 1-2 hours without an electric burner that would degrade brewed coffee. KB (glass carafe) is the budget version; only choose if you'll drink the full pot within 30-45 minutes of brewing. KBGV (variable extraction) adds half-pot brewing capability for smaller volumes.

KBC (Cup-One, single-cup brewer) is rare and expensive; only worth considering if you specifically need single-cup convenience and don't want to invest in V60 setup separately. The standard KBT covers single-cup use too — just brew a half-pot.

Skip: Cup-One model alternatives, off-brand variants. Stick with the official Moccamaster KBT or KBGV. Don't buy used Moccamasters from unknown sources — repair history matters and verified Technivorm parts may not be available for very old models.

How do I keep a Moccamaster running well long-term?

Three rules. First, descale every 1-2 months depending on water hardness. Hard water deposits calcium in the heating element; descaling extends machine life from 10 years to 20+. Use Technivorm's recommended descaling solution or food-grade citric acid solution; don't use vinegar (residue affects flavor). Second, clean the showerhead and spray arm regularly. Coffee grounds accumulate in the spray pattern; periodic cleaning maintains brewing consistency.

Third, replace the brew basket and carafe gasket as they show wear. These are inexpensive consumables ($10-20) but failing gaskets cause leaks and inconsistent brewing. Don't ignore worn parts; cheap to replace, expensive to ignore.

If a Moccamaster develops issues, contact Technivorm directly through their U.S. service network. Repairs are usually cost-effective; the machines are designed for repair rather than disposal. Most issues resolved through replacement parts rather than full machine replacement.

What's the right brewing approach for Moccamaster?

Use the pre-rinse setting if your model has one (KBGV does; standard KBT doesn't). For machines without pre-rinse: pre-rinse the paper filter manually with hot water before adding coffee, then drain. The pre-rinse removes papery taste from filters; produces cleaner cup.

Standard ratio: 1:15 to 1:17 coffee-to-water (66-72g coffee per 1L water for full pot). Slightly stronger than typical American auto-drip standards (which often use 1:18 or weaker). Use medium grind size — between drip and pour-over standard. Coarser than V60, finer than French press.

Don't put pre-ground coffee from the supermarket in your Moccamaster. Quality beans freshly-ground produce dramatic improvement over pre-ground commodity coffee. The Moccamaster is a precision brewer; feed it precision input. Quality beans + Moccamaster = specialty-grade coffee at automated convenience.
