Tips and Tricks to make your coffee to taste better using Moccamaster™ Coffee Maker

The Moccamaster Coffee Maker is said to be one of the best coffee makers available by its dutch manufacturer. They are handmade in the Netherlands and have been awarded quality seals by both the Specialty Coffee Association and the European Coffee Brewing Centre. It is the same coffee machine model that has been available since 1968 and is pretty much unchanged. In addition to making outstanding premium coffee, the Moccamaster comes in a unique design with a range of different colors, can brew up to 40 fluid ounces of coffee in a few minutes, has a 5-year warranty, is inexpensive to buy, and requires inexpensive replacement parts. It’s a classic that’s here to stay. Keep reading for a few tips on how to get the best tasting results from this coffee maker.

Using the right water.

When making a fresh pot of coffee, you should use the purest, chlorine-free cold water, and instead of pouring it into the coffee pot, you should pour it from a clean carafe. Old oil builds up in your coffee pot from previous brews and can manipulate the flavor and cause residue to build up inside the machine.

Proper use of your filter.

If you are using a white filter as opposed to a brown filter, you should rinse it with warm water before use to rinse out any possible bleach, which could change the taste of your premium coffee. Since brown filters aren’t made with bleach, the flavor comes through a lot better without them needing to be rinsed. You can also look into using high purity paper filters or a more permanent filter made from neutral materials. Rinsing any filter with water first is always helpful to remove lint and give a nice and even extraction.

The right temperature.

Using the right temperature is another key component to brewing the perfect cup of coffee with the Moccamaster. The most desirable temperature for brewing coffee is between 195 and 205 degrees Fahrenheit. If your brew temperature is too hot, you will burn your coffee, which causes a bitter taste.

Choose the best coffee.

You should choose the best coffee bean type for you. All coffee beans are either Robusta or Arabica and then they are each broken down into several more different types. The type of coffee beans you use will greatly affect the end product. Soluble coffee is more expensive but is considered to be better than the ones with insoluble grains.

Can you really make a good cup of coffee using coffee maker?

Add flavor to your coffee beans.

Before grinding your coffee beans, consider adding flavor to them. Flavors like cinnamon, chocolate, sweeteners, and other delicious ingredients can be added to your coffee beans. This is a little-known secret used in coffee shops all over the world. Adding it to your coffee beans as opposed to your coffee after it’s brewed gives it the maximum flavor. You would literally be mixing it in to be soaked up into your coffee beans.

Grinding fresher coffee beans.

Consider buying fresh coffee beans and grinding your coffee beans to medium coarse fresh from a coffee roaster. If you roast your coffee beans longer, your coffee will be stronger, and if you don’t roast them for very long, your coffee will of course be lighter. You will definitely want to choose a really good quality coffee grinder, and make sure you are not using stale coffee beans, as this can give your coffee an ashy flavor. Be careful not to grind your beans too long so you can avoid over extracting the coffee, causing the flavor to be bitter. Consider always buying coffee beans as opposed to buying ground coffee, particularly because you don’t know how long it’s been on the shelf. It’s also a good idea to use an air-tight container to store your coffee to prevent a possible build up of moisture.

Use the best coffee to water ratio.

To get the best coffee to water ratio, it is suggested that you should use about 7 grams of coffee to every 3 fluid ounces of water. Some people prefer their coffee stronger than others, but this coffee to water ratio is sure to give an enjoyable balance for anyone. Some people compare brewing a great pot of coffee to making a great cocktail because the ratio is so important for making a great finished product. Consistency is key.

Stir the coffee in the filter.

Once you have your fresh ground coffee in the filter, and after about 30 seconds after it begins to brew, it’s good to stir it in the filter to help eliminate any dry clumps. It is also good to stir it again inside the filter once the water stops pouring into the filter.

Stir the coffee in the pot.

Once your coffee is finished brewing, give it another good stir while it’s in the pot. The Moccamaster usually ends up brewing stronger at the bottom of the pot, and lighter at the top. Stirring the coffee in the pot will help distribute the oils for a full, uniform flavor in every cup.

Clean and descale your coffee pot regularly.

Cleaning your coffee pot and machine after every use is also very helpful in getting the best flavor out of your premium coffee. The buildup of coffee residue is sure to cause clogs and blockages. It could even affect your brewing time and temperature. The plastic water tank is fixed on the Moccamaster, so it cannot be replaced. Cleaning the water tank with a non-abrasive sponge or cloth will be the best alternative to keeping it clean. Moccamaster’s manufacturer also recommends descaling the machine once every 3 months or every 100 brews. If you have trouble keeping track of how long it’s been since the last descaling, pay attention to if the taste of your coffee, the temperature, or throughput time changes. Those are key factors in determining when it’s time to descale.
